It’s a revelatory set of recordings that, were it not for some resourcefulness and an awful lot of good fortune, would have just rotted away in an attic somewhere in England. A project many months-years in the making, we're over the moon to finally have this record in our hands. It serves as a loving snapshot and summary of the career of one of the most unique acts to have emerged from Bristol who for whatever reason never quite entered the admittedly astronomically-high-standard canon of great music to have emerged from the city in the past few decades. We sincerely hope this compilation changes that, and brings a fresh audience to a sound that sounds a strikingly fresh today as it did at the time. Such is the love and care that went into the record, we couldn't not leave the main word to Chris and Kiran, who spent so much of their time making this record a reality. Over to them:

"On a personal level his one has been a long time coming… about 15 years, to be precise. My first encounter with Maximum Joy was around 2001 when Chris Farrell – back then fresh-faced working the counter of Imperial Records (R.I.P.) in Bristol, now boss of the Idle Hands shop and label there (and still fresher-faced than most) - played me the song ‘Silent Street / Silent Dub’, the lesser-spotted B-side of their Stretch 12”. We were in a club, mind, but I think “played me” is still accurate: it was opening time and there was no one else in the room. Quite honestly, I've never heard anything that comes close - before or since. On the one hand, it's quintessential post-punk; on the other hand, in 2017 that broad catch-all tag does a disservice to its sheer vibrancy and musicality. Janine Rainforth’s singing, probably my all-time favourite vocal take, seems to combine an ageless English folk sensibility with both a teenager's innocence/insouciance and a smoked-out drowsy jazz maturity well beyond her years. Charlie Llewlin’s drumming is broken beat some 20 years ahead of schedule, Dan Catsis’s bassline is heavy-as, and Tony Wrafter’s free-soaring trumpet channels Don Cherry with aplomb. All bound together and ultra-intensified by Dick O’Dell’s vertiginous dub mix. And that's just Side 1 Track 1. The rest is nearly as good. Very proud to be reissuing this magnificent body of work on a new label with Chris that we've called, unimaginatively, Silent Street. 2x12" with download code, and liner notes by Rainforth, Wrafter and Kevin Pearce.

Kiran Sande (Blackest Ever Black) and Chris Farrell (Idle Hands) trigger their Silent Street cooperative with a surefire survey of Maximum Joy’s dub-fuelled punkfunk and pop singles 1981-1982, collected as I Can’t Stand It Here On Quiet Nights. Digging a pivotal point in Bristol’s dub-informed lineage, it reveals the sound of Bristol parties and after-hours blues in the early ‘80s, which would also find success among the punk-funk crowds and hip hop stations of NYC. Fans of Vazz, The Slits, Glaxo Babies, The Pop Group need to check this one!

“I Can’t Stand It Here On Quiet Nights is centred around the trio of singles the band released on Dick O’Dell’s Y Records between 1981-1982. Their first, ‘Stretch’, was licensed to seminal American label 99 Records and soon after became an anthem on the New York club underground, a cult staple at Danceteria and on late-night radio. Closer to home and a shared personal favourite is their first B-side, ‘Silent Street / Silent Dub’: a languid, haunting tribute to long summer nights in St Pauls (where the Idle Hands shop presently resides), and specifically the Black & White Cafe, “where dub-reggae reigned supreme, 24/7”. This is one of, if not our favourite, tracks to have come out of Soundman Chronicles ever, and a perfect way to reintroduce the label after such a long hiatus.

B side In The Dust Of This Planet maintains a similarly pretty aesthetic, instead using intricate manipulations of space and atmosphere to hail to its musical forebears. Driven forward forward by a counterpoint of percussive, tonal chords and bell-like chimes which evolve infrequently into soaring bleeps and squeals, it eschews the structural tropes of more traditional dance music tracks in favour, again, of a clear nod to the dub-techno way of doing things - allowing the rhythm and melody to sink into you over its runtime, hypnotising and subduing until you're lost in its captivating sound-world.

O$VMV$M flips the A side into an absurdist reflection of itself, redacting the atmospheres of Old Fashioned and channelling them through a unified, tape-saturated signal chain. It's his partnership with Jealous God that says the most; his productions quake with the same character that pioneers like Silent Servant and Regis spent their many years perfecting. It's all the more impressive, then, that despite this clear lineage of producers working in a similar field, Payne manages to find an individual approach to working in this style.

Opener Spoken Ashes is a perfect example of this - the EBM-tinged gated bassline and vocal echoes are underpinned by a muscular, grooving rhythm section that shares more with the world of contemporary techno than it does with the work of say, Broken English Club. Full Ashram Devotional Ceremony, as with that record, touches on various underground musical signatures from the '80s but, as the name goes some way to suggesting, injects a bit of psychedelica into proceedings - the album is book-ended by lush, constant tones that act almost like aural palette cleansers.

The three show-stoppers here are the middle tracks: May You Be The Mother - May You Be The Sun, Full Ashram Emerging Theme and Every Moment Is a Birth. Both tend towards virtuosic and constantly morphing synth harmonies, the former fusing Jethro Tull-esque jazzy flute melodies with Minimal-wave electronics and a shuffling, glitching drum-machine beat that degrades into washes of tape delay every now and then. It's a strong statement of intent, and one of the most inventive re-imaginings of this small side-genre of post-punk. Full Ashram Emerging Theme combines the meditative tones of the opener and closer with the neo-psychedelic quality of the rest of the tracks, conjuring something up that sounds somewhere between Joy Division and early Pink Floyd, in the process summing up and symmetrically dividing the music that comes before and after. The snarling, wickedly treated basslines echo his biggest bangers, but the surrounding music and atmospheres are moodier, less aimed at the jugular and pushing harder to achieve a monumental sense of pent up dread. A side Brain Scan eschews half-time feel for a sped-up techno step as discordant bells, bleeps and screeches up the tension to insane levels. It's probably the most versatile of the three tracks - you'd reasonably anyone from Mala to Hodge to Paula Temple hauling this one in the record bag.

The two B sides fit a little more firmly into the dubstep umbrella, but thanks to a healthy dose of reverb and the aforementioned focus on atmosphere, they're certainly not nearly as straightforward as that description might suggest. Street Light has a junglist feel thanks to those mesmerising pads - they give off a loosely middle-eastern flavour amongst the stark coldness of the rhythm and bass treatment. Finally there's Abducted, a half-time banger like only Pinch can do - a spiritual successor to earlier works like Swish or The Boxer - this is the sound of that earned him his reputation in the class of o.g. dubstep - wicked!

Brain Scan

Street Light

Abducted

Sounnnnddddbwwwoooooyyyy!

Johnny Osbourne lining up any lickle soundbwoy and firin lyrical shots, right over this deadly King Tubby production from around 1987.

Fuzzy Jones on the intro too, and that makes it worth the dollar alone.

Waterhouse 7" -
Vocal on top, dub on flip.

Johnny Osbourne - Line Up

King Tubby - Version

Black Uhuru ft. Four minutes of multi-dimensional sonic furore introduce us to Solberg's inner mind, by turns atmospheric, euphoric and above all lined with the dread betraying a deep debt to soundsystem culture. Developing rapidly into more ferric terrain, there's an abrasive hypnotism to the rhythmic hooks that make their laboured entrance into proceedings into the A side's middle half. While the three tracks on this side are distinct, the flow is so perfect that they could be mistaken for movements in the vein of classical music.

The B side makes more strident moves into dance-floor territory. Unlike the A side, the three tracks on offer here are totally distinct, opening with TTT Minimal TTT, a ferocious 4/4 number that occupies a space somewhere between JK Flesh and Christian Vogel if one of his Magnetic North records was slowed down to 33rpm. Final track Kompdub Perkctest is the final nail in the coffin, a polyrhythmic panic-attack waiting to happen. Fitting somewhere between hardtek, speedcore, techno and DJ Don't, it'll put off as many people as it sucks in - obviously, we bloody love it.

We reckon this is Solberg's best work to date, and certainly some of his most accessible as far as we're concerned.

Served up in proper No No fashion, with inlay designed by the man himself.
