Stone cold classic, from Rob Smith on Punch Drunk, 2007 –

The binding thread between the Bristol legacy Smith & Mighty and the continuation of this particular lineage of dubwise soundsystem music, is of course Rob Smith aka RSD. There was no better place for him to cement his status as pioneer for the crossing between UK rave culture and Jamaican soundsystem music, than on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk imprint of course. Punch Drunk operated from within – the now lost, but not forgotten – ‘Rooted Records’ and was central to the ‘Bristol Sound’ at the time… The word ‘Bristol Sound’ is a bit harder to confine now and it’s probably a dirty word, but made sense back then.

There is no doubt that both ‘Corner Dub’ and ‘Pretty Bright Light’ have certified anthem status, the effortless cross of junglist breakbeat and dubwise bassbin pressure is highly infectious, RSD at his best, sure to raise a smile and get you moving, even after a decade of rotation.

Big tunes back then, big tunes right now. Long may they live.
