Two cuts of underground soul music on Typesun’s own label Root Elevation – 10″ LTD to 300 numbered copies with insert.

Bristol producer Typesun steps out with two dreamy female vocal lead tracks, featuring the remarkable vocal talents of Alison Garner from “The Fauns” (a group Typesun has drummed with) and the Danish singer Alex Rita of “Okapii”, for a varied yet coherent release.

Lead track “Icebergs” is a lesson in minimalism, utilising a few choice elements to create a powerful and emotive whole. A tremolo laced synth oscillates gently to provide the bed for a very intimate and heartfelt vocal from Alison Garner, whose breathy delivery is reminiscent of a more esoteric Jessie Ware or a more consistent FKA Twigs. The use of a discordant synth stab is a deft choice by Typesun, serving to echo the raw emotion expressed in the lyrics whilst giving a nice contrast to the sweet melodies and grand structures that build to a crescendo for the latter half of the track. Very convincing stuff here!

On the flip “Water Song” is noticeably more upbeat in terms of tempo and percussion, but still retains the haunting feel in the atmospherics as droning voices provide the backing for a punctuated vocal from Alex Rita. This track is in more of a Neo-Soul ilk than the glassy synth-pop of the A-side, it sounds like something Gilles Peterson would play at his most contemplative or melancholic.

Underground Electronica and Pop at its finest.

Limited to 300, with hand-numbered insert.
