Dons of contemporary, 170bpm minimalism touch down on Samurai, the most rewarding label mining the rich seam where drum n bass and techno overlap.

Ruffhouse's have been hard at work refining their strikingly minimal take on drum n bass for some time, with releases on Exit, Ingredients and Doc Scott's 31 label. Straight 9's is arguably their finest record yet though - 'Straight 9's' is a masterclass in looping drums and subtle atmospheric shifts which builds for a tense 5 minutes before second dropping into an electrical storm of delayed stabs and fizzing arpeggios.

'UVB-76' on the B-side Is better still, a stepping kick pattern laced with subtle edits is spliced with flying amen breaks, snares are exploited and twisted into metallic textures and cavernous delays fill the mix to deadly effect. Absoloutly deadly in a club, enough sub to knock the wind right out of you and both tracks are lengthy enough to allow you to get very busy in the mix.

While the sound is very much rooted in the 'Proton' era of No U-Turn around 1997, the drawn out and subtle shifts in arrangement and atmospherics see Ruffhouse much more closely aligned with the very best in techno minimalism, loop based experiments of early Sleeparchive and the attitude of Cold Water era Regis on Downwards - This is some of the best D&B we've heard in a very long time, and believe us, we've been searching...
