Black Jazz Recordings was founded in 1972 by the pianist Gene Russell to promote the talents of young African American musicians. Sadly the label was only active for 4 years but in that time issued no less than 20 albums, most of which are sadly out of press and going for silly money second hand.

Thankfully, the Japanese Snow Dog label bought the catalog in 2012 and have re-issued some of the most sought after material. And, in an effort to reach new ears have enlisted the help of some of the planets most highly regarded selectors to dig through the enviable label archives.

The label reportedly sent a box of records to Mr. Parrish, who set about creating a mix for them to issue as a cd, this fine double pack collects all those rare and long out of press gems in one place for those that want the introduction to the world of Black Jazz Recordings.

This is one of those records that you’ll come back to again and again, those with even a passing interest in Jazz music and those who dig Theo’s original productions will get a lot of enjoyment from this one, very much recommended.
