7 challenging and unerringly beautiful tracks featruing the elctric guitar of Andy Moor and electronics of Yannis Kyriakides, released as a collaboration between Unsounds and Discrepant. A hot, hot tip from us.

"Andy Moor and Yannis Kyriakides lovingly deconstruct and reassemble their favourite rebetika music in a set of 9 pieces that encompass a wide scope of musical vision. This is an unusual and original take on the so called "blues" music of the Greek diaspora of the early 20th century. Originally recorded and released as an exclusive download for Seven Things, this live set recorded in Glasgow's CCA in 2006 is a re-release on CD with two additional tracks."
Words From the label

Here's a 2006 review of one of the live sets from which these recordings were based:

"Andy Moor and Yannis Kyriakides ... have found a true middle ground that seems to be Greek folk music of the early 20th Century. Kyriakides, born in Cyprus but raised in the UK, might have grown up around it. Moor the anarchist might see some appeal in the barroom guitar songs often associated with the revolutionary movement ... Now they have something to talk about, and it's refreshingly new ... Moor plays guitar against a variety of backgrounds supplied by Kyriakides, including samples of scratchy old rebetika records ... Layers of strings meld together - bouzoukis from the past slide familiarly around a real-time electric guitar. Feedback and electronic tones sit comfortably alongside each other, only occasionally peaking in Exworthy frenzy. It's beautifully mysterious. "
