Lock up your daughters, there's a new Avon Terror Corp in town. The shifty Bristol/global collective stretches it's oily industrial tentacles over the borders to Paris for a shocking debut skullfucker from Cruelle.
Taking cues from harsh noise, pounding industrial, militant steppas and gothic French pop, 'J'ai remplacé l'amour par l'argent' is like nothing else on your tape shelf. Dripping with seduction, drama and heavy duty electronics, Cruelle's debut is a bewildering, tantalising MUST for fans of Heimat, Brigitte Fontaine, Ministry and 3rd album Portishead.
Sounding like TNT Roots running a session in the flaming Notre Dam, Cruelle veers from trap-induced trills to Phantom of the Opera grade vocal theatrics in a brand new kind of heavy. The album crushes you into a baroque submission until 'But' and 'Je peux pas t'aimer' dial in some lilting trip-hop / dub seduction - a welcome side-step showcasing Cruelle's artistic range and breadth (and showing this ain't just some beardy black-t-shirt-guy in a bedroom dying to shock you).
Then there's just enough time for Bad Tracking overlord Kelan to fly in for a guest finale on the gruelling NSFW addiction anthem 'Lick the bag' before the tape clicks to a stop. Will you ever be the same again? We doubt it.
Limited edition of 50 cassettes that are nighe almost sold out at source, we're blessed to have the last handful.
Long Live Avon.
