Four high-tensile, dread drum workouts for the darkest of sessions, conjured up by Grebenstein on the Samurai sub label, Horo.

After a previous outing last year on the techno institution, Downwards, you know that the young producers credentials are well in order. Crafting slow burn drum workouts that progress to the point of white hot intensity, using only a select few elements. The lead track 'Gloss' begins with a sparse drum arrangement which gains momentum over its near seven minute run, flooding the mix with washes of static and goosebump inducing chords.

This theme of stripped back drums and hard working minimalism is explored through the rest of the ep - 'Self' being treated to a version as well which is by far the most spacious of cuts on offer here - echo chamber metallics paired with widescreen textures offer up mental images with cinematic clarity. 'Loss' closes this stunner of an EP, a canny mix of shoegaze haze and mutant D&B constructs.

If you dig the sounds of Exit, Cylon, Shackleton, The Skull Defekts this is for you - those with a penchant for crushingly dark, tense as you like trips will be handsomely rewarded when your tonearm touches this one.
