Carla Boregas - Pena Ao Mar
Sao Paulo based artist Carla Boregas (last seen around these parts, via Bokeh Versions) steps up with a mesmerizing set of synth worlds, hushed ambience and delicate vocal narration all served in abstract, shifting shapes on Pena Ao Mar, via iDEAL Recordings >>
Known also for activities in the post-punk / local industrial experimental scene via bands such as Rakta, here Carla conjures up a calmer, more watery, also perhaps more inward, explorative approach to sound and mood.
Some tracks tick to their own rhythm in a rising and falling fashion, as warbled keys find unlikely melodies in between the elements, others stretch out and meld in subtle ways, guiding our synapses into a cozy tangle of frequency. Tracks often build and expand over time, the drones fold over harmonic sequences amplified wizardry-level dynamic mixing of elements, such as on the title track Pena Ao Mar.
Bruised string instrumentation opens up the vortex on the following cut, a shade darker than the place we were led to before, swarming into a slow sandstorm and sharp tones that want to lift us up, fighting with the subtly alluring sound of scraped ceramics and bells anchoring the mood back down to ground level somehow.
Things fizzle and simmer on the following cuts, with hacked vocals from a paralell dimension interjecting icey reverberation on Sopro, whereas on Fronteira things are boiled down into pure drone DNA and ethereal swathes of ambience, and on the final cut, A Cidade Dos Outros, cicada-esque synthesis percolates in a brittle way, over filtered bubbles of synth sound and widening echo & reverberation - acting as the final pathway out of (or shall we say 'into'?) this particular consecution of moods which Carla Boregas opened up for us here with this softly incredible journey of an album, Pena Ao Mar.
Served on ocean blue vinyl.
