Maral - RWDFWDMIX006
>> 2023 Re-run <<
RWDFWDMIX006 is here!
Following on the heels of Ossia, Transient, KEMAA, Bokeh Edwards & Franco Franco & Jade as Avon Terror Corps, Neek & Batu - we're pleased to present the latest instalment in our mix series, from one of LA's wildest new exports: Maral.
Maral made a mark on us with her debut release last year, which appeared on cassette via Astral Plane Recordings (We're currently trying to salvage some copies to be sent over here from LA - hold tight!).
On this release, titled 'Mahur Club', Maral charges through a truly global sound that is rooted in the sonic tradition of her Iranian heritage - Old recordings of folk music that has been passed through the generations, get mangled, stirred, re-mixed and go head-to-head with Baltimore club sounds, Lisboa / Angolan styles, Reggaeton, Dub, RnB (we'll always be happy to hear fresh reminder of Aaliyah's unbeatable cool, no matter how twisted it is!) and much more.
To us, her music sounds like it comes from the same school of cultural intrigue, and the undiluted stream of unhinged creativity as Muslimgauze's work. Maybe it's too easy to make this connection, but we mean it in the best way. Most importantly, her music contains a very healthy and much needed dose of purposely imperfect, and therefore 100x more human, adventurism - 'fuck your preconceptions, just join the ride'.
For this two sided tape mix excursion, Maral has delivered a wild, fast-paced, genre-shifting mix of influences, unashamed club bangers, and other explosiveness for the first 45mins on Side A.
Side B features 45mins of strictly Maral productions - raw edits, unreleased cuts and a few bits you may recognise from her Mahur Club release. 100% wicked & wild!
The cassette, to us, presents the perfect insight into Maral's unique sound and style.
