The latest drop from Memotone comes in the form 'Smallest Things' - an album of a wholly wholesome, gently sprawling compositions pressed to vinyl for World Of Echo.

Following his excellent Tollard 2LP for TTT (quite the rhyme) and the wickedly diverse Pruning 'comp-album' for Discrepant, Smallest Things takes us for a mysterious walk into a landscape of humble mood-scaling sonic introspections.

By way of his signature style electro-acoustic rhythms and freely moving songs, Memotone calmly builds worlds where clarinet, guitar, synths, fine tuned effects and microphone trickery effortlessly morph into one weightless, unrestrained passing cloud... Inviting us inside so we can hover along down a gentle stream of sound that fluctuates like a waterway rolling past rocks and pebbles, following the fog somewhere along a hidden river, explorations unfolding with each sweep of melody guiding us along with, a self-explaining kind of ease.

Or as World Of Echo say, in a perhaps more grounded way:
"It is possible to hear a variety of influences in his music: folk and jazz forms, the textural inventiveness of British DIY electronica and Chicago post-rock and the blurred sci-fi brass of Jon Hassell are all discernible. But mostly, Will's work seems to stem from a constant drift between long hours in his home studio, and time spent outside in the woods and hills around his home in Wales. "

Knowing Will fairly well - it's been a few years of linking up at various Bristol events, or having chats in the RWDFWD office as he drops by his latest goods for us - we like to call this kind of thing honest business - We can confirm that he is a grafter when it comes to music, and has been for many years. But despite having such a high rate of productivity, it never seems to feel like work, and it certainly doesn't sound like it - you can hear a deep passion, not just for playing instruments and tuning frequencies in new, as well as traditional ways, and you can hear the music of someone who is maturing with each new musical output, whilst keeping a keen ear for exploration throughout. The deep well of influences of course shape his sound, but Memotone is in a class of his own at the same time, as a deep appreciator of many styles of music, and as part of the Bristol scene too.

Credit is certainly due for his series of pretty damn masterful compositions in recent years - this one perhaps being one of his most 'solid' and succinct yet - to our ears it could sit on the shelf next to some Blue Note albums, as well as being appreciated by listeners of Madlib's higher level hip hop compositions, or appreciators of old time Folk music - these are all ingredients we know Memotone digs into, and ties into his practice.

When Will dropped round at RWDFWD HQ to pass us this record, we talked about the mood of the sleeve art, which to our eyes does a real good job of describing the sounds in this album too. Should you want to forget all we said just now, and just stick on the record and gaze into the picture sleeve - we wouldn't blame you...
This is the kind of album you should take some time out for, stay still a bit.
A much needed dose of anti-hype for the too-fast paced world we live in now.
