V/A - Different Circles Vol.1
The first physical manifesto of one of the most interesting tangents of the UK underground right now - Weightless.
Headed up by Mumdance & Logos, the Different Circles label is a vinyl only outlet for Weightless experiments to be disseminated. The first plate, cut at Transition and individually numbered call on a crew of 6 producers heading up this new wave of club music, an icy metallic mix of the ghosts of Eski-beat, high precision sound design and Grime 2.0.
Melancholic synth workouts and diamond tipped percussion are the order of the day here, heavily verbed gunshots offer a glimpse back at the source material but don’t dwell on it, instead looking for a way to further the sound.
While each of the producers here has released music on other established labels, Different Circles offers the most coherent document so far, one that outlines the sound perfectly and offers an accessible way in.
There is a solid 25 minutes of music on offer here, all cut nice and loud. What is perhaps most surprising is how versatile it all is, as an immersive listening experience and also as remarkably useful and fun DJ tool. Everything on here is around the magic 130-140 mark. If you’re a grime guy, techno fiend or dubstep DJ, this is crucial.
For fans of Mumdance, Logos, Filter Dread, Pinch and the Keysound camp.
