Viridian Ensemble - Trotula (2nd Edition)
Another absolute gem from our box of goods brought to us from the Brunswick Club collective - we've been wanting to get our hands on some recorded material from Bristol's Viridian Ensemble (one of our favourite acts in town!) for you all...
Here we go, there you have it:
"Trotula is a live recording of Viridian Ensemble’s final performance at Bristol’s legendary underground music venue, artist studios, and Viridian Ensemble’s home from the inception of the project: The Brunswick Club.
It references the ‘Trotula Texts’ on women’s medicine, which were hugely influential across medieval Europe. Viridian are an interdisciplinary ensemble, who advocate for womxn in the experimental arts from eclectic specialisms and backgrounds. Inspired by the vanguards of feminist free improvisation such as Les Diaboliques & Feminist Improv Group, as well as 16mm expanded film, Viridian is an ethereal amalgam of image, voice, cello, double bass and percussion, which re-imagines folkloric forms and tropes of femininity.
Dissociative states, keening, and the supernatural inspirit the ensemble. Each performance evokes utterances, nonsensical languages, and trans-species forms of communication through collective rhythm, tone, and resonance.
